These models focus on the prevention of difficult behaviours and complement each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ARC offers ways to organize an environment and equip <strong>care workers<\/strong> with practices that are adapted and sensitive to the <strong>complex trauma<\/strong> experienced by clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PBIS framework proposes a method for organizing environments in a predictable and coherent way. It integrates various proactive and educational strategies to prevent disruptive behaviour while promoting the development of young people&#8217;s social-emotional skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-columns-title-section columns-title-section-block\"><div class=\"columns-title-section-block__inner\"><div class=\"columns-title-section-block__col columns-title-section-block__col--title\"><h2 class=\"columns-title-section-block__title section-title\"><strong>Objectives <\/strong>of the<strong> Pingouin-Polaris<\/strong> Program<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"columns-title-section-block__col columns-title-section-block__col--content wysiwyg\">\n<p>The goal of the program is to support educational teams that work with young people that have adjustment difficulties.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the program aims to increase the application of <strong>trauma-informed<\/strong> practices among educators.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, it aims to reduce the use of certain more punitive practices, such as restraint, seclusion and time-out.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed program also aims to promote the development of resilience in youth by offering them ways to interact positively with a safe environment that focuses on the development of regulation and certain key skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Complex Trauma<\/strong> in Youth  &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:47% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17527 size-full\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.boscoville.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PINGOUIN-SCHEMA-TRAUMA-COMPLEXE-EN-2048x1536.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Complex trauma can be defined as a set of developmental after-effects related to repeated experiences of mistreatment or abuse that occurred during development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children must adapt to this hostile climate and develop in an environment in which the response to their needs is unpredictable and where threats to their integrity are common.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since these experiences occur during the development of these children, complex trauma impacts their cognitive, emotional and relational development. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of complex trauma is reflected in a variety of after-effects, including attachment, biology, affect regulation, dissociation, behaviour management, cognition, and self-concept (<em>Cook et al., 2003; Milot et al., 2013<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, complex trauma affects the way young individuals function and the way they conceive the world and interact with it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why take an interest in <strong>complex trauma<\/strong> among young people under <strong>youth protection<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several U.S. studies report a particularly high rate of traumatic exposure among youth housed in rehabilitation centres (<em>Fischer et al., 2016; Pane Seifert et al., 2015<\/em>) or youth protection (<em>Greeson et al. 2011<\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Qu\u00e9bec, young people placed in foster care under the Youth Protection Act (YCJA) are particularly at risk of having experienced various traumatic experiences such as neglect, exposure to domestic violence and physical, sexual or psychological abuse. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study by Collin-V\u00e9zina et al. (<em>2011<\/em>) showed that more than 3 out of 5 young people had experienced more than two types of traumatic experiences, while 1 out of 5 had experienced five types. Despite this, these young people were nevertheless mostly followed for reasons related to their behavioural disturbances.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These studies highlight the importance of understanding the impact of different forms of mistreatment on children&#8217;s lives. They also support the adoption of a <strong>trauma-informed approach<\/strong> that prioritizes the creation of safe, sensitive and caring environments that can help them overcome these traumatic experiences (<em>Collin-Vezina and Milne, 2014; Plumb et al., 2016<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:7px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-secondary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b217a888fe60d945f22c6e75154379e\">What You Get with the <strong>Pingouin-Polaris<\/strong> Program<\/h2>\n\n\n<section class=\"text-icon-block aligndefault\"\n>\n   <div class=\"text-icon-block__col text-icon-block__col--icon\">\n          <span class=\"text-icon-block__icon icon-book\"><\/span>\n       <\/div>\n   <div class=\"text-icon-block__col text-icon-block__col--content\">\n              <p class=\"text-icon-block__title\">Training<\/p>\n            <div class=\"text-icon-block__content wysiwyg\"><p>The Pingouin-Polaris program offers 6 and a half days of training designed to help better understand complex trauma. We plan to continue to evaluate the Pingouin-Polaris program over the next few years. <br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reduction of punitive interventions: <\/strong>In Qu\u00e9bec, Matte-Landry and Collin-V\u00e9zina (<em>2021<\/em>) evaluated the effects of training on the trauma-informed approach in the child protection sector among staff in 44 living units.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these environments had received the Pingouin-Polaris trauma-informed training orientation, while the majority had received equivalent training from the research team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results show that this type of training has significantly reduced the use of punitive interventions such as restraint, seclusion and time-out among young people (<em>Matte-Landry and Collin-V\u00e9zina, 2021<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decrease is more significant among young people who frequently experienced this type of intervention.
